Page 6

Modify intersection to improve capacity and reduce intersection delay (Countermeasures S03 and
PLS-LOS).
Foothill Road at Dublin Canyon Road / Canyon Way
Last year was the first time this intersection has been on the top 10 list with ten vehicle collisions
compared to six this year.
Analysis of the collision patterns last year showed five of the ten collisions were broadside collisions
caused by red-light violations (four northbound red-light violations and one southbound left turn red-
light violation). All five of the red-light violation crashes involved the northbound through and the
southbound left turn.
Staff evaluated the visibility of the northbound traffic signal head and while adequate, an additional
signal head was installed (Countermeasure S02).
Analysis of the collisions this year did not show any correctable patterns.
First Street at Angela Street
Three of the five collisions were northbound vehicles involved in a rear-end collision midday on
weekdays. The stopping/slowing vehicle was in the queue for the next traffic signal at Neal Street.
During two of the collisions the driver looked away just prior to the collision and in the third the driver
was reported traveling well over the speed limit. This section of First Street is straight and level with
excellent sight distance. While the initial analysis showed a possible correctable rear-end collision
pattern investigation into the collision details determined a correctable pattern did not exist. No other
patterns were identified.
Dougherty Road at I580 Westbound Off Ramp
Three of the five collisions involved a northbound vehicle broadsiding a westbound left turning vehicle.
In two of those collisions the northbound vehicle ran a red light. This intersection has two advance
signal heads (one on each side of the roadway). Yellow backplates have also been installed to call
attention to the signal head designations. No other patterns were identified.
Action to take:
Evaluate ability to add signal heads or adjust signal timing (Countermeasure S03). Investigate
software solutions that could implement crash avoidance reaction (longer all red).

No correctable patterns were identified at the remaining intersections.
