Page 11

Pedestrian Analysis
Intersection and Midblock
No intersection or midblock segment had more than one pedestrian collision in the current three-year
period. While the lack of locations with more than one collision is excellent from a traffic safety
perspective, it makes it difficult to identify location specific patterns.
Bicycle Analysis
Intersection (Bicycle)
Eleven intersections had two or more collisions in the current three-year period. Patterns or actions to
take were identified at the following intersections:
Santa Rita Road at Valley Avenue
This interseciton was analyzed last year with no new collisions
at this intersection. In the last report there was one additional
collision at the shopping center driveway. Staff evaluated sight
distance at this driveway south of the intersection and found
adequate sight distance. The property owner was asked to trim
one shrub to provide for better sight distance (Countermeasure
NS-11). There have been no new collisions at this driveway.
Black Avenue at Cedarwood Lane
Both collisions occurred in the same marked crosswalk,
found the bicyclist at fault and involved a juvenile
traveling to or from school. In the first collision the
bicyclist thought the vehicle was slowing to let him
cross. In the second collisions neither the bicyclist nor
the driver saw each other prior to the collision. It should
be noted this crosswalk is bulbed out to increase
visibility of those pedestrians/bicyclists choosing to
cross there. This section of black Avenue is level and
straight with parking prohibited near the intersection to
allow for good visibility. Pedestrian crossing signs are
located both in advance of the intersection and at the intersection to identify this as a crossing location.
Action to take:
Evaluate pedestrian crossing volume and sight distance. Consider adding RRFB to improve driver
recognition of pedestrian in the crosswalk (Countermeasure R37PB).
