5. Are there any play elements or design features that should be included that you
aren't seeing in the design or options?
6. What is your age?
Approximately a dozen people attended the on-site outreach meeting, three residents
provided email input regarding Val Vista Community Park, and 120 people filled out the
online questionnaire.
The primary comments the City received regarding the playground are summarized
here:
1. Playground Option 1, Butterflies, was the preferred option. 80 percent of
respondents preferred Option 1.
2. The colorful color scheme was preferred. 77 percent of respondents preferred
the colorful color scheme.
3. Benches should be installed. 63 percent of respondents requested adding
benches.
4. Monkey bars and other climbing elements should be included. 62 percent of
respondents requested monkey bars.
5. Try to make the playground more interconnected. Requested at the on site public
outreach meeting.
6. Swings should be incorporated into the design. 8 respondents requested the
addition of swings in the comment section of the questionnaire.
7. Include accessible play elements. 6 respondents requested accessible play in
the comment section of the questionnaire.
8. Provide shade. 6 respondents requested adding shade in the comment section of
the questionnaire.
For the questionnaire, most of the respondents were 31-55 years old (57 percent),
followed by 55+ years old (19 percent), and 6-12 years old (17 percent). The other age
groups consisted of less than 3 percent of the respondents per age group.
DISCUSSION
The public input was incorporated into the design to the extent feasible per the project
budget. The final conceptual design was then presented to the Parks and Recreation
Commission on December 7, 2022, for a recommendation. The Parks and Recreation
Commission unanimously recommended approving the final conceptual design as
presented to the Commission.
The final conceptual design recommended by the Parks and Recreation Commission
(see Attachment 3) is the option preferred by the public (Option 1), preferred color
scheme, and includes additional, monkey bars, more interconnectivity between play
equipment, swings at the play area for 5- to 12-year-old children and at the play area for
2- to 5-year-old children, and accessible play elements. Although the design does
include shade, additional larger shade structures were not included as the cost of the
canopies exceed the budget. Additionally, the large shade trees currently located on the
south side of the playground will continue to grow and provide more shade. The Parks
Page 3 of 4
