BACKGROUND
The City Council exercises its authority under state law and appoints the City Attorney.
(See Cal. Government Code §36505.) Dan Sodergren was appointed as Pleasanton's
City Attorney in May 2016, and has over 32 years of legal experience, including working
with cities throughout California.
DISCUSSION
The City Attorney's employment contract provides for an annual performance review by
the City Council. At its special meeting on December 15, 2022, the City Council
considered Mr. Sodergren's accomplishments as the City's legal counsel preparing
ordinances, resolutions, and contracts; advising elected and appointed officials and
staff; staying current with land use and housing laws; guiding staff to implement federal
and state environmental laws; providing legal counsel to the Livermore Pleasanton Fire
Department; managing staff attorneys and coordinating risk management. A Fourth
Amendment to Employment Contract City Attorney is attached that provides for a five
percent (5%) pay increase for an annual salary of$264,600, which is appropriate
considering his performance in relation to attorneys in other jurisdictions and their
experience and compensation.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review
Mayor Karla Brown Susan Hsieh
Director of Finance
Attachment: Fourth Amendment to Employment Contract City Attorney
