17
THE CITY OF
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pLEASANTO\
December 20, 2022
Operations Services
TITLE: AUTHORIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO PURCHASE A VOLVO
COMPACT WHEEL LOADER FROM VOLVO CONSTRUCTION
EQUIPMENT & SERVICES IN THE AMOUNT OF $170,425
SUMMARY
The City is in need of a new construction backhoe to replace the current 24-year old
1998 Caterpillar backhoe. A backhoe is vital for maintenance tasks such as loading
dump trucks and trailers. Most construction backhoes have a useful life of 20 years
and/or 5,000 hours of use. The current unit (Unit #238) is a 1998 Caterpillar 416C 2X4
backhoe with 3,962 hours of use and has experienced a variety of mechanical issues
for which $45,906.72 has been spent on maintenance to date. The current backhoe is
scheduled for replacement as part of the City's 20-year replacement plan.
As well, the current backhoe has a Tier 1 CARB rating, which is not in compliance with
CARB (California Air Resources Board), so replacement will help meet the CARB's
diesel-powered regulations.
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize the the City Manager to purchase a Compact Wheel Loader with Volvo
Equipment & Services in the amount of $170,425.00, which includes a 15 percent
contingency.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
This purchase is budgeted and funded within the Internal Service Fund - Equipment
Replacement (514) in FY 2022/23. The purchase price is $148,196.14 including delivery
and taxes; adding a 15 percent contingency brings the total to $170,425.
