and specification adherence and the bid was found to be responsible and responsive.
Farber Specialty Vehicles has provided bookmobiles for libraries in Alameda and
Monterey counties, and the City of Anaheim.
The proposed Library and Recreation mobile outreach vehicle is a 28-foot Ford F59
Stepvan that includes options such as book carts, wheelchair lift, exterior awning,
skylights, exterior storage, custom interior storage, WiFi, sound system, 55" LCD
monitor, HVAC, and solar panels. The vehicle will display a custom wrap so it will be
recognizable throughout the city. The vehicle identified for purchase can be driven with
a standard Class C California driver's license and will be programmed and operated by
existing staff.
While not in use, the vehicle will be stored at the Operations Services Center. Vehicle
life expectancy is 16-20 years and will be included in the fleet vehicle repair and
replacement program for 16 years, with going maintenance and fuel costs of$12,500
per year. This funding will be allocated in future budget cycles.
The City has a single 30,000 square foot library facility that serves approximately
80,000 residents across 24-square miles. In the City's 2021 community survey, 73
percent of the respondents noted that providing public library services as extremely and
very important, while at the same time indicating an 8 percent reduction in satisfaction in
the provision of public library services. Notably, a Library and Recreation mobile
outreach vehicle would expand access to services by offering books and materials for
borrowing as well as program opportunities at locations beyond the library. It is intended
to serve the entire community, with a focus on populations of our city that are often
lower-income and lack access or regular transportation.
Additionally, this vehicle will invigorate existing Library and Recreation customers by
offering fun, educational programs that reflect the needs of Pleasanton's diverse
population, welcoming people of all ages and abilities. Whether it's lending books or
technology, sports equipment or STEAM kits, the expectation is that the mobile
outreach vehicle will expand the department's services to all who live in Pleasanton.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
Heidi Murphy Susan Hsieh Gerfy Beaudin
Director of Library and Director of Finance City Manager
Recreation
Attachments:
1.
