Pleasanton's OTS ranking for 2019, was 7th out of 105 for bicycle crashes involving people 15 years
old or younger and 3rd for 2018. These numbers suggest a need to concentrate more time educating
the youth on bicycle safety, awareness and the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet. The
City of Pleasanton is looking to reduce bicyclist crashes by concentrating on roadway violations
being committed by bicyclist, whether it be through education or enforcement. Pleasanton with
conduct safety presentations and bicycle rodeos.
PPD has continued to hire new Police Officers over the past few years and there is a need for the
new officers to attend RADAR and LIDAR School. Speed remains one of the City's top three PCFs
and being able to have more officers trained in the tools which can lead to more enforcement and
education for drivers in the city. Placing officers in a position to enforce speed violations can reduce
the number of injury crashes. Pleasanton will conduct specialized enforcement for speed and have
more RADAR/LIDAR trained officers.
PPD takes pride in traffic enforcement and in safety. Throughout the year, the traffic division, which
consists of five motor officers, one Sergeant and one Lieutenant, is responsible for investigating all
crashes. As with many other agencies, the department is experiencing staffing shortages, which
leads to special enforcement efforts being lost. PPD will assign additional officers to address
bicycle safety violations and address primary crash factors within the City.
The Pleasanton Police Department participates with surrounding police departments in a
collaborative effort to address current trends within their city. These trends often include the hosting
agency's main PCF in crashes occurring in their city. This Concentrated Intensive Traffic
Enforcement(CITE) team meets twice a month with the hosting agency rotating through each of the
six participating agencies. Motor units from around the Tri-Valley area saturate the hosting agencies
jurisdiction and address identified traffic enforcement needs. With many police agencies being
short staffed, CITE team is an excellent way of addressing PCF's and reducing crashes.
For the reasons cited above, PPD looks forward to expanding traffic efforts in an effort to reduce
crashes, educate the community and make the roadways safer for all.
Traffic Data Summary
2.
