BACKGROUND
Call ippe Preserve Golf Course has been open for public play since November 2005.
Callippe continues to be one of Northern California's most popular and award-winning
golf courses. Although Callippe Preserve has been well received by players in the Bay
Area since its opening, course improvements are regularly planned to maintain the
challenging course design, enhance player experience, address wear and tear on
heavily used areas of the course, and to address any maintenance issues. In 2017,
several greenside bunkers on holes#3, #8, and #9 were rebuiltto correct some design
deficiencies. In 2019 bunkers on holes#2, #5, and#8 were renovated. Thisyear's
proposed bunker renovation project has been identified as a priority to address grading
issues, slope deterioration, and poor drainage.
DISCUSSION
City staff and course operator CourseCo have designed a multi-year bunker
improvement plan that includes renovation every other year of several bunkers of the
course's 58 bunkers. This improvement plan is typical among golf course maintenance
practices to repair wear and tear on heavily used areas of the course and to address
any maintenance matters that typically occurin bunkers and tees, including grade
improvements, rebuilding slopes and improving drainage to improve playability.
This project includes renovation of the bunkers on holes#4, #6, #7, and #17 according
to the standards and specifications of the Better Billy Bunker Method. Currently,
unwanted dirt from the sides of the bunkers has mixed with the existing bunkersand
thus changing its consistency and playability. Additionally, due to this mixing, the
bunkers no longerdrain effectively. During moderate rain events, sand washes off the
bunkerfaces bringing dirtand rock with it, resulting in extremely poor playability and
added maintenance costs.
The scope of the bunker renovation project includes removing the existing sand, gravel
and drainpipe. Utilizing the Better Billy Bunker Method, new drainpipe, gravel, polymer,
and sand will be installed such that dirt is prevented from washing off bunker
slopes. The Better Billy Bunker Method is a patented method for building and renovating
golf course sand bunkers to improve infiltration of water through a drainage system that
reduces the chance of contamination of the sand and to reduces erosion and
maintenance to provide a consistent playable sand bunker.A drainage system and a
layer of fine pea gravel is installed over the entire floor of the bunker.A pre -polymer is
sprayed onto the layer of pea gravel to secure it in place. After the polymer sprayed
bunkeris permitted to cure, a sufficient amount of bunkersand is added and compacted
so the entire bunkeris covered. Subsurface drip irrigation is installed around the
bunkers and sod is placed around the bunkerto stabilize the edge of the bunker. City
andCourseCo staff have been pleased with the performance of the previous Better Billy
Bunker Method bunkers installed in 2017 and 2019.
