Annual Collision Analysis 2022
. .
Summary,
This report summarizes the collisions within the City in 2021 and analyzes trends and patterns to
identify changes that can be made to reduce the number of collisions. Reported traffic collisions
involving vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians are reviewed on a weekly basis by Traffic Engineering.
The weekly review looks at individual collisions to determine if improvements can be made to improve
safety. This report takes a comprehensive look at the one-year and three-year trends to identify larger
patterns and improvements that can improve safety.
Volume Trends
The pandemic caused a significant
decrease in vehicle traffic and a Traffic Volume Change
corresponding decrease in overall 100%
collisions. This reduction in traffic 80%
volumes was most notable with the firstso°r°
stay at home order in. However, traffic ° 56% 63% 67°67%
has remained at reduced levels as 4or°
some workers continued to work from 20% 33%
home and there was less ability/desire 0%
to travel for leisure. This trend has been oma°' oti° oti° oti° o"° oti° otiti 6-1> 6-1> 0> 61> otic"
reported by multiple transportation titi' \at,' \ w° titi\ \ 3\\ 4°
agencies and a sampling of key
Pleasanton intersections showed the trend locally.
Collision Trends
The total number of collisions for the current year' was
approximately 5% more than the prior year's number of TRENDS
collisions (246 compared to 235) and 23% less than the ■Current Year ■Last Year ■Previous 3 Year Average
previous three-year average2 of 319. The 5% increase
is consistent with the slight increase in traffic volume
from the previous year as traffic slowly returns to pre- N m
pandemic volumes. The collision trends have mirrored
the traffic volumes.
There were two more bicyclist collisions this year (28rsiN m
compared to 26 last year and 32 for the three-year — — — • • I
average). Pedestrian collisions increased by one, with PEDESTRIAN BICYCLE TOTAL
eight compared to seven last year and 13 for the three-year average. The decrease in collisions from
the three-year average can be largely attributed to the decrease in traffic volumes stated above.
1 Reported traffic collisions that occurred between 12/01/2020 and 11/30/2021 are included in the"current year"
2 The previous three-year period is 12/01/2017 to 11/30/2020
Page 2
elevated paths where it crossed over the road and concurred with Member Negro
regarding completion of projects.
Member Maciel stated he preferred the proposed option better than the previous option.
He suggested adding space to the bike lane. He expressed concern regarding pick up
and drop off in front of the school and floating parking stalls creating more blind spots.
Bicycle, Pedestrian & Trails Committee Minutes January 24, 2022
Page 3 of 5
