Bicycle Analysis
Intersection (Bicycle)
Ten intersections had two or more collisions in three-year period. Patterns were identified at the
following intersections:
Santa Rita Road at Valley Avenue
There were four bicycle related collisions at this intersection. •
The location of the collision pattern, however, is 100 feet south
47.4
of the intersection at the northern most driveway for the ., *
Safeway shopping center. This location has two collisions .
involving a vehicle either entering or leaving the driveway. A "" it ''
review of the past 10-year collision history shows four ;;
collisions at this driveway. , sl
r
Several utility poles and street trees are located in the t zr
sidewalk adjacent to the roadway. This line of trees and poles •
makes it difficult to see approaching bicyclists. On the parking . + r
lot side, there are large shrubs, signs and a bus shelter that also limit visibility of approaching
bicyclists.
Staff will evaluate the ability to improve sight distance at this location and/or recommend the closure of
this driveway access.
Stoneridge Drive at Stoneridge Mall Road
There were two collisions at this intersection, and while the
two collisions do not establish a pattern, a "no right turn"
ilz>
blank out sign will be installed at this location that will be
activated with the pedestrian crossing signal. This will allow
the bicyclists and pedestrians to begin their crossing ahead
of the right turn movement.
The 10-year collision history at this intersection did not have ' '
a similar pedestrian or bicycle collision. However, staff will install the no right turn blank out signs to
increase driver awareness of a crossing pedestrian/bicyclist and restrict the turning movement during
the initial crossing.
Page 12
al. The driver did not see '
the pedestrian. No collisions were reported at this location in 2021.
No roadway/signage changes are recommended at this time.
No other intersection had more than one pedestrian collision in the last three years.
Expanding the analysis to five years did produce 6 total intersections with two collisions, however,
none of the locations contained a pedestrian collision from 2021 .
Midblock
There are no midblock sections identified that had more than one pedestrian collision during the three-
year period.
Page 11
ollision reports show that many result
There are 84 collisions in the current period where age of the bicyclist was determined (there were 85 total bicyclist
collisions)
Page 10
The previous 10 years with no collisions indicate that the visibility and warning of the roundabout is
adequate. Green street guidance signs are present approaching the roundabouts to provide warning,
and staff will evaluate if additional warning can be placed on the approaches.
No correctable patterns were identified at the remaining intersections.
Page 6
Avenue was not on the list for the first time, with only two collisions last year. Similarly Hopyard Road at
Stoneridge Drive also had two crashes. Both of these intersections average 6+ crashes per year
historically.
The top three intersections are described below as well as any intersections where staff identified
patterns/improvements.
Foothill Road at Dublin Canyon Road / Canyon Way
This is the first time this intersection has been on the top 10 list. The period from 2017 to 2020 the
intersection had a total of 9 collisions. Ten collisions in one year is three times the normal rate for this
intersection. It should also be noted that this intersection continues to experience lighter than usual
traffic with 25,000 vehicles per day compared to the pre-pandemic volume of 45,000 per day. This
continued low volume can be attributed to the low ridership on BART and the continued work from
home by most of the office building businesses around Stoneridge Mall.
The intersection was modified in June of 2020. The southbound alignment was altered slightly to allow
the addition of a third southbound left turn lane.
Page 5
