from one of two main elements, 1) the driver of the vehicle failing to look both ways before crossing the
sidewalk (many mention looking at the oncoming vehicle traffic but not checking the opposite direction
to clear users on the sidewalk) and 2) the bicyclist not making eye contact with the driver before
passing in front of the vehicle. Seven of the 10 crashes on the sidewalk were also bicyclists under the
age of 16. Additional education for these riders would be beneficial.
Pedestrian Analysis
Intersection
Two intersections had more than one pedestrian collision in the current three-year period. The
intersections/collisions are discussed below.
Paseo Santa Cruz at Camino Segura (two collisions)
This intersection is all-way stop controlled and has four ,4
marked crosswalks. In the first collision a westbound vehicle ►R ,
struck a southbound pedestrian in the west crosswalk. The - 477
, * ,,;
driver did not see the pedestrians and had the setting sun in ` `P
her eyes. In the second collision a westbound through vehicle ' . } v
stuck a westbound pedestrian in the south crosswalk. The
-4 l.f_
driver did not see the pedestrian. No collisions were reported
at this location in 2021.
No roadway/signage changes are recommended at this time.
Main Street at Rose Avenue/Neal Street (two collisions) Y
This intersection is controlled by a traffic signal and has four ° - .
marked crosswalks. In the first collision a northbound left turning
41111tvehicle struck a southbound pedestrian in the west crosswalk on ;,,i 1 w 'r`• ,r''
a "walk" pedestrian signal. The driver did not see the pedestrianez-
~"
prior to the collision. In the second collision a southbound left
turning vehicle struck a northbound pedestrian in the east A #0`?< t ` '
•
crosswalk on a "walk" pedestrian signal. The driver did not see '
the pedestrian. No collisions were reported at this location in 2021.
No roadway/signage changes are recommended at this time.
No other intersection had more than one pedestrian collision in the last three years.
Expanding the analysis to five years did produce 6 total intersections with two collisions, however,
none of the locations contained a pedestrian collision from 2021 .
Midblock
There are no midblock sections identified that had more than one pedestrian collision during the three-
year period.
Page 11
ollision reports show that many result
There are 84 collisions in the current period where age of the bicyclist was determined (there were 85 total bicyclist
collisions)
Page 10
The previous 10 years with no collisions indicate that the visibility and warning of the roundabout is
adequate. Green street guidance signs are present approaching the roundabouts to provide warning,
and staff will evaluate if additional warning can be placed on the approaches.
No correctable patterns were identified at the remaining intersections.
Page 6
Avenue was not on the list for the first time, with only two collisions last year. Similarly Hopyard Road at
Stoneridge Drive also had two crashes. Both of these intersections average 6+ crashes per year
historically.
The top three intersections are described below as well as any intersections where staff identified
patterns/improvements.
Foothill Road at Dublin Canyon Road / Canyon Way
This is the first time this intersection has been on the top 10 list. The period from 2017 to 2020 the
intersection had a total of 9 collisions. Ten collisions in one year is three times the normal rate for this
intersection. It should also be noted that this intersection continues to experience lighter than usual
traffic with 25,000 vehicles per day compared to the pre-pandemic volume of 45,000 per day. This
continued low volume can be attributed to the low ridership on BART and the continued work from
home by most of the office building businesses around Stoneridge Mall.
The intersection was modified in June of 2020. The southbound alignment was altered slightly to allow
the addition of a third southbound left turn lane.
Page 5
