Although this will reduce the total number of City-owned and managed tennis courts
from 21.5 to 19.5 courts (there is a half-court with a ball wall at Meadows Park), that is
still more than other Tri-Valley cities. Additionally, the total available public courts in
Pleasanton is 30.5 courts which include the two Pleasanton Middle School tennis courts
that the City maintains and the nine courts at Amador Valley High School that the City
and School District have a shared-use agreement for (assuming two of the Muirwood
Courts are converted to pickleball).
Staff conducted research, discussed pickleball with other cities, and presented potential
pickleball locations within Pleasanton to the Parks and Recreation Commission at its
November 18, 2021, meeting. Based on that presentation, the Parks and Recreation
Commission recommended locating pickleball courts at Muirwood Community Park.
To help fund construction of the pickleball courts and court resurfacing project at
Muirwood Community Park, staff submitted a Proposition 68 grant application for
$227,000 on December 16, 2021. Proposition 68, the Parks, Environment, and Water
Bond, approved by voters on June 5, 2018, authorized $4 billion in general obligation
bonds for state and local parks, environmental protection and restoration projects, water
infrastructure projects, and flood protection projects. A portion of the Proposition 68
grant money is distributed through a non-competitive grant and set aside for each local
agency. The $227,000 in funding is Pleasanton's portion of the total funding from
Proposition 68.
The Muirwood Community Park Court Resurfacing Project, which includes conversion
of two tennis courts to six pickleball courts, resurfacing the two remaining tennis courts,
resurfacing the pickleball courts, resurfacing the existing basketball court, and providing
associated site amenities and furnishing replacement is expected to utilize all available
funding for the project. Funding includes $227,000 from the Proposition 68 grant and
$250,000 from the Annual Court Resurfacing Project, CIP No. 22744.
Staff is requesting that City Council review and approve the conversion of two tennis
courts to six pickleball courts at Muirwood Community Park.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
'11'L-cf7 47)`)/1?
)1://
Stephen Kirkpatrick Heidi Murphy Mahin Shah Brian Dolan
Director of Director of Library and Interim Director of Interim City
Engineering Recreation Finance Manager
Attachments: 1 .
