Centennial and Bernal Community Parks do not have existing tennis courts that could
be converted nor was pickleball considered in the master plan for either park, so no
further analysis of those parks was conducted.
Community Outreach Process
A notification was sent out to all residents within 500 feet of Muirwood Community Park
for the November 18, 2021 , Parks and Recreation Commission meeting where
pickleball was being presented. The Commission voted 5-0 in favor of converting two
existing tennis courts to six pickleball courts at Muirwood Community Park. However,
based on the initial input from the Commission and the public, staff determined to hold
further public outreach for the courts prior to presenting the project to City Council.
The proposed public outreach events for the pickleball courts were posted on the City's
social media sites, advertised on the website, included in the newsletter, and all
Muirwood neighbors (properties between 1-680, Foothill, West Las Positas and
Stoneridge) were notified of the public outreach events (approximately a 5,000-foot
radius from Muirwood Community Park).
The City received a substantial amount of feedback regarding the proposed conversion
of the two tennis courts to six pickleball courts at Muirwood Community Park. The
feedback received was primarily positive, and the project received a lot of support from
pickleball players and people interested in becoming pickleball players, including
support from Pickleball of Pleasanton, an informal group of Pleasanton residents that
play pickleball, and Tri-Valley Pickleball, a non-profit organization created to promote
pickleball in the Tri-Valley area.
However, some of the Muirwood neighbors were concerned with more people using the
community park and the vehicular traffic associated with that increased use.
Additionally, some people expressed concern regarding the noise from playing
pickleball or were upset that they were losing two tennis courts due to the conversion to
pickleball courts.
DISCUSSION
The sport of pickleball has increased significantly in popularity over the last decade and
that growth is reflected in the demand for pickleball play in Pleasanton. Currently, the
City hosts pickleball play through its tennis vendor, Lifetime Activities, with pay-to-play
courts available at the Pleasanton Middle School gym for three hours on Saturdays and
two dual-striped pickleball courts at Tennis and Community Park available for a total of
10 hours Friday through Sunday.
With construction of dedicated pickleball courts identified as a need in Pleasanton
during the CIP Workplan process for fiscal years 2021/22 — 2024/25 and the demand for
courts far exceeding the availability of the current pickleball options, staff is proposing
the construction of six dedicated pickleball courts to replace two of the four existing
tennis courts at Muirwood Community Park as part of the 2022/23 Annual Court
Resurfacing Project.
