Evergreen ash was the next most prevalent species, with eight trees (about 20% of the
population). The ash trees were growing in a line along the south side of the property, planted in
an alternating pattern with the blackwood acacias (see below). The ashes ranged from fair
condition (5 trees)to poor condition (3 trees), with diameters ranging from 6 to 12 inches (Photo
2).
Seven blackwood acacias were assessed (about 17% of population). Almost all of the acacias (6
trees)were in poor condition, with only tree#53 in fair condition. They ranged from 10 to 17
inches in diameter, and many were leaning, with heavy lateral branches and their crowns weighted
to one side (Photo 2).
The project site contained tree species common to many Bay Area residential landscapes and
streets, particularly in the Tri-Valley area, and included a few fruit trees. The most common trees
in the project vicinity were coast redwoods, all but one of them off site. There were 14 redwoods,
which made up about 34% of the population. Most of the redwoods were in good condition (12
high", "moderate" or"low". Suitability for
preservation considers the health, age and structural condition of the tree, and its
potential to remain an asset to the site for years to come.
High: Trees with good health and structural stability that have the potential
for longevity at the site.
Moderate: Trees with somewhat declining health and/or structural defects that
can be abated with treatment. The tree will require more intense
