Dear Honorable Planning Commissioners,
I am writing today to offer my support for the Resurrection Greek Orthodox
Church (RGOC) and their proposal to move to Pleasanton, which is coming before
the commission on March Ioth.
RGOC would be an enhancement to our community through their many active and
inclusive ministries. Their parishioners have been well-known for generously
giving of their time, treasure, and talents to a variety of volunteer service projects
aimed at helping those in need since the Church's inception in 1971. One specific
noteworthy example of their efforts to build a more equitable community is
RGOC's partnership with the Alameda County Community Food Bank. I am
pleased that they are looking to continue this vital service to our own Pleasanton
residents by continuing their twice monthly food pantry for those in our city
dealing with food insecurity.
Pleasanton has always been a community which has prided itself as a great place to
raise a family, and the church also stands out for its commitment to family care.
Resurrection offers a variety of family nights, recreational opportunities, religious
education, social events, and parenting groups for the benefit of parishioners and
non -parishioners alike. Many of RGOC's families have proudly called Pleasanton
their home for years, and the parish's leadership has identified our community as
the perfect setting for growing their ministries due to the influx of young families
who have been drawn to both RGOC and Pleasanton because of their shared
values.
As an inclusive community with a commitment to supporting diverse cultures, the
location of RGOC in Pleasanton would be a real asset. Although there has been a
long-standing presence of Greek -Americans living here, there will now be an even
greater opportunity for Greek cultural expression through their renowned folk
dance programs, annual Greek Festival, and other programs for all residents to
enjoy. Similarly, I think it is the sign of a healthy and welcoming community to
support all religious faiths, and it will give me a sense of pride to know that
Pleasanton is the epicenter for the Greek Orthodox Church and all who wish to
learn about the Orthodox faith within the Tri -Valley and San Ramon/Danville
areas.
Other benefits to the project include the fact that RGOC will bring tremendous
architectural beauty to our community through its unique Byzantine design that is
rooted in antiquity. I agree with City Staff's analysis that there will not be any
adverse traffic impacts due to the fact that most activities will take place primarily
on Sundays or during non -commute times. It also seems like an appropriate
location from a zoning standpoint given the proximity to the existing Church of
Christ on Dublin Canyon Road. Finally, I believe that RGOC is a more suitable use
for the site than alternatives previously contemplated and currently allowed for this
location, such as housing.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request. I hope that the
Planning Commission will support this worthwhile project.
SinceG (//
