• Downtown Parking Strategy: On-street parking demand is at or over capacity on
most blocks within Main Street commercial area during peak times, although the
number of public and private spaces within downtown is adequate to meet
parking demand.
• General Plan (Policy 10): Require adequate on-and off-street parking.
CONCLUSION
Staff requests policy direction from City Council on the following questions:
1. What is the preferred timing to phase out the temporary pop-ups?
Staff Recommendation: Phase out the temporary pop-up program at the
conclusion of Weekend on Main (September 6), with a secondary
recommendation to allow for temporary popups to continue through the end of
October.
2. Should the City consider adopting a more formal longer-term parklet program?
Staff Recommendation: Staff does not recommend a program that would create
private/exclusive parklets for individual businesses. If a parklet program is to be
considered, it should be structured around providing a limited number of parklets
that would be available for general public use.
If a formal parklet program is of interest to the Council, staff will dive deeper into some
of the details outlined above to develop a draft program for Council's review. Staff will
also conduct outreach including with the Pleasanton Downtown Association, Chamber
of Commerce, and Economic Vitality Committee. Note that staff will be providing an
update on this item to the Chamber and PDA at meetings scheduled on July 13 and
14th, and will report on feedback received at the July 20th City Council meeting.
Submitted by: Approved by:
Ellen Clark Nelson Fialho
Director of Community City Manager
Development
