expressed their desire for an option that more closely resembles the existing structure.
Residents also requested belt swings in place of the spring toys at the central
playground of Ken Mercer Sports Park. City staff also received mixed reviews regarding
the playground design for the 5- to12-year-old age group play structure at Tawny Park,
requests for pull-up and monkey bars at Tawny Park, and a few residents requested
that the swings at Vintage Hills Park remain as-is.
DISCUSSION
The mixed opinions expressed during the public outreach, the minimal input received
from children in the target age groups, and the feedback regarding the play structures
for both the eastern playground at Ken Mercer Sports Park and the playground at
Tawny Park prompted staff to create a follow-up survey. The survey incorporated the
input received from the public outreach, including showing a more traditional option for
the eastern playground at Ken Mercer Sports.
Survey and Summary
The survey was advertised on February 4, 2021, and open for a two-week period. A
total of 1,325 people completed the survey. A question regarding the age of
respondents was included in the survey. For simplicity in summarizing the results in this
report, the age of the respondents is grouped into children (ages 0-18) and adults (older
than 18).
The survey questions were as follows:
1. Which color scheme do you prefer at Ken Mercer central playground?
2. Which design do you prefer at Ken Mercer east playground?
3. Which color scheme do you prefer at Ken Mercer east playground?
4. Which design do you prefer for Tawny Park playground?
5. Which color scheme do you prefer for Tawny Park playground?
6. Which color scheme do you prefer for Vintage Hills Park playground?
Responses from children and adults were similar on all questions except the preferred
design for the east playground at Ken Mercer Sports Park (Question 2 in the list above).
Two options were presented: a modern design (Option 1) or a traditional design (Option
2). The children preferred Option 1 (53 percent to 47 percent) and the adults preferred
Option 2 (59 percent to 41 percent).
The difference in preference was presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
After some discussion, the commission voted in agreement with the children for the
modern (Hedra) design but directed that the concerns expressed by the adults
regarding visibility and access be addressed in the design of the Hedra structure. As a
result, the Ross Recreation proposal has now changed the panels from solid and
opaque materials to a metal screen with perforations to improve visibility. Handholds to
help with access have also been included in the design. Additionally, the manufacturer
has explained that the design allows for multiple access points for adults to reach
children but admitted the renderings do not show it clearly.
