Axon Signal technology aims to reduce the occurrence of failed activations during
critical incidents. The Body 3 camera wirelessly communicates with the Taser 7 and a
magnetic accessory attached to officers' holsters. Axon Signal will automatically activate
an officer's camera and any Axon cameras within 30 feet of the officer when any of the
following occur:
1. The officer's Taser is activated.
2. The officer's firearm is drawn from its holster.
3. The sound of a gunshot is detected by the camera.
Axon's cameras constantly buffer 30 seconds of video recording. Any of the above
conditions will cause the camera to activate and capture video beginning 30 seconds
before the activation. It will also log what caused the activation and can notify
supervisors in real time. This technology works to reduce human error in body worn
camera activations while improving officer video capture rates and public trust.
Evidence.com and Supporting Software
The police department utilizes Axon's Evidence.com database to securely store and
track the enormous amount of data generated from body worn cameras. It also serves
as a central location to store and track all other forms of digital evidence collected
during police investigations (security footage, crime scene photographs, recorded
interviews, etc). The system creates an audit trail which documents who has viewed a
piece of evidence. It facilitates secure sharing of data related to a specific case with the
District Attorney's Office, defense attorneys, other law enforcement agencies as well as
supervisors and managers within the department. Axon's Evidence.com is compliant
with strict state and federal regulations concerning Criminal Justice Information
Systems.
In addition to storing data, Axon's evidence management services include configurable
retention periods, transcription services and automated redaction assistance. A critical
incident usually involves hours of video from multiple officers' cameras. Before being
released to the public, the video must be thoroughly reviewed to ensure the redaction of
victim identities and other protected information. The technology in Axon's Redaction
Assistant program has enhanced redaction features that will save valuable staff time
and provide a more timely release of video footage.
Axon's Device Manager Application allows Tasers, cartridges and cameras to be
assigned to officers within seconds using the unique barcodes affixed to them instead of
a manual entry process.
Department Policy — Taser
Pleasanton police department Policy Manual Section 309 addresses the use of
conducted energy devices. Only officers who have received training on the devices can
carry a CED. Once issued, a CED must be carried whenever an officer is working in
uniform. A verbal warning should always precede a CED application when practicable
Page 5 of 8
