BACKGROUND
In June 2020, the City received a request from the Pleasanton Downtown Association to
close a portion of Main Street to provide outdoor dining in support of downtown
restaurants and merchants. The City designed a traffic control plan and began
implementing the closures on Friday, June 19. Statewide Traffic Safety & Signs, Inc.
was the selected contractor due to the availability of equipment, necessary traffic
devices, and their ability to meet the project schedule.
The contractor performed street closures weekly from Friday afternoons to Sunday
evenings, from June 19 to August 30. The street closure program was extended through
November 1, 2020. The Pleasanton Downtown Association reported that 29 businesses
participate in the weekly street closures.
DISCUSSION
The cost for street closures for FY 2019/20 totaled $10,045. Based on actual costs for
FY 2019/20, staff is estimating that $125,200 is needed for street closures for FY
2020/21 through November 1, 2020. In addition, staff is requesting an additional
$40,000 for potential street closures in the Spring/early Summer of 2021 for a total of
$165,200 along with a 15% contingency ($24,800). The total amount needed for FY
2020/21 including contingency is $190,000 and requires City Council approval per the
City's Purchasing Policy.
Submitted by:
Kathleen Yurchak
Director of Operations and
Water Utilities
Fiscal Review:
Tina Olson
Director of Finance
Approved by:
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
Attachments:
1.
