• Amador Community Park
• Bernal Community Park
• Ken Mercer Sports Park; and
• Staples Ranch (undeveloped location).
While no location currently meets all the site attributes and availability of space, the
following two locations meet most of the site attributes.
Ken Mercer Sports Park Option (Attachment 1):
The current playground near the softball fields at Ken Mercer Sports Park, which is
scheduled for renovation in the next 1 to 2 years, would be replaced by an all -abilities
playground. The current playground and open area adjacent to the playground,
extending south towards the walking path, consists of a little over an acre of land. This
location contains all the desired site attributes with the exception of the potential for
conflicting uses. Further considerations for this location include:
• Pros:
o Site already has most of the necessary infrastructure
o Shorter design/construction process due to existing infrastructure
o Less expensive to construct but greater cost per square foot
• Cons:
o Sports Park is heavily utilized with current functions
o Parking opportunities are limited
Staples Ranch Community Park Option (Attachment 2):
Staples Ranch is approximately 17 acres of undeveloped land located on Stoneridge
Drive across from the Stoneridge Creek retirement community and adjacent to the
Pacific Pearl Shopping Center. The potential all -abilities playground could be 1 to 2
acres within this space. This location contains all the desired site attributes except that
the site is not centrally located in town. Further considerations for this location include:
• Pros:
o All -abilities playground could bring Staples Ranch into the park system
earlier than currently planned
o Parking opportunities are abundant
• Cons:
o Site requires a thorough master plan
o Longer design/construction process due to lack of infrastructure
o More expensive to construct, but decreased cost per square foot;
Construction costs for recently bid all -abilities playground projects in the San Francisco
Bay Area range from $3 to $5 million. The cost of construction for an all -abilities
playground at Ken Mercer Sports Park could be towards the lower end of that scale
because most of the infrastructure is already in-place. The cost of construction at
Staples Ranch would be more significant since the whole site is undeveloped, because
the playground could be part of a larger project, the cost per square foot of the
playground could be less.
