From: C Lam
Sent: Saturday,January 18, 2020 2:31 PM
To: Larissa Seto
Cc: c11273
Subject: Support of Youth Commission
Dear Ms. Larissa Seto, Assistant City Attorney,
My name is Connor Lam and I am a 7th grader at Harvest Park Middle School Pleasanton.
When I was in Elementary, my PE teacher would always end the class with, "Please never smoke" and we will
reply with, "Yes sir". Back then,I didn't understand what that meant. Fast forward middle school, there has
been some talk that some middle school kids are actually vaping, whether they are in PMS or Hart. I believe
vaping is becoming a big issue in Pleasanton.
I read from Countertobacco.org,
Documents obtained from tobacco companies show evidence that corporate marketers have targeted
convenience stores, grocery stores, and other tobacco vendors near schools and playgrounds in an effort to
attract young smokers. Research shows that schools with more stores within walking distance have a higher
smoking prevalence than schools with fewer retailers nearby.
I strongly support the Youth Commission's recommendation to restrict the sale of tobacco products within
1,000 feet of schools.
I- know that we, as a community can count on you to think about the welfare of Pleasanton youth and help pass
this resolution.
Thank you and have a great day!
- Connor Lam
