THE CITY OF
East Pleasanton Specific Plan 2121
Public Comments pLEAS4NTONo
From: Cindy Everson
Sent: Monday, November 11, 2019 5:32 PM
To: Mayor and City Council <citycouncil@cityofpleasantonca.gov>
Subject: East Pleasanton Development Planning-Affordable Housing
Dear City Council.
I am writing to you in regard to your upcoming November 19th City Council meeting when you will be
discussing the planning of a portion of East Pleasanton that has not yet been developed. I am hoping
that you will seriously consider including housing for adults with developmental disabilities in your plans
as there is a growing need for affordable housing for this population.
I am the parent of two young adult sons with autism,Shane and Joe, ages 23 and 20. We have lived in
Pleasanton for 20 years and my boys have thrived in this town. They participate in local activities such as
Concerts in the Park, street fairs, Farmers Market, the county fair and other such events. Shane, my
oldest son, is high functioning and is now employed with Pleasanton Unified School District. He works
out at the Bay Club daily and socializes every weekend with a group of his friends. He travels on local
buses, Bart and uses Uber. Pleasanton is truly their home and, as their parent, my hope for both of my
sons is that they will reside in this town that they know and love.
Both Shane and Joe are on the Interest List for Sunflower Hill which we are excited about, but the odds
are very slim that either one of them will be able to live there as there will be 31 apartments and
hundreds upon hundreds of applications. Some of the statistics regarding housing for adults with
disabilities include:
• The housing demand by 2023 for adults with developmental disabilities who wish to live
independently include 233 people currently living in Pleasanton and 5,500 currently living in
Alameda County.
• The turnover in developmental disability housing is extremely low as residents typically age in
place.
• REACH currently owns and operates 11 homes in the Tri-Valley, 6 in Pleasanton. Two
townhomes were recently purchased, but the most recent purchase before that was 10 years
ago. REACH has a waiting list of 77 people.
• As mentioned above,Sunflower Hill will be choosing residents soon for the 31 apartments they
will have available in June 2020 but there are hundreds on the interest list for these.
Please consider this urgent need of affordable housing for adults with disabilities at your next City
Council meeting. These individuals are wonderful people who contribute so much to our beautiful town
of Pleasanton and are a part of our community. Please help them reach their potential by providing
more affordable housing so they can live independently and thrive.
Thank you.
Cindy Everson
Provided to City Council for the February 18, 2020, Meeting
