Around the time
we arrived, she was newly diagnosed with a developmental delay, which we later found out was autism.
She went through the Pleasanton schools where she was given a supportive environment to learn and
grow.
Now she is 22. She graduated from the Pleasanton schools and works as a Project Search intern at the
Doubletree Hotel in Pleasanton. She hopes it will lead to permanent employment. The only thing we
worry about is where she will live. The only affordable option on the horizon is Sunflower Hill, which is
less than 5 minutes from our home. She is on a waiting list with several hundreds of other adults with
disabilities who hope to land one of the 31 apartment units in this unique, supported-living community.
Provided to City Council for the February 18,2020, Meeting
1
