THE CITY OF 6
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pLEASANTON.
December 17, 2019
Engineering
TITLE: APPROVE A PROFESSIONAL SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH JEFF
KATZ ARCHITECTURE IN THE AMOUNT OF $12,500 TO PERFORM A
PRIVACY NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF FIRE STATION 2
SUMMARY
Fire Station 2 was built in 1985 and designed with living quarters to accommodate three
squads of four firefighters, with each squad serving 48-hour shifts. The living quarters of
the station include an open bunkroom, a bathroom with open showers, and an open
common bathroom area with multiple sinks and vanities. As constructed, the living
quarters require updating for both privacy and the accommodation of firefighters of all
genders. This study will determine the feasibility of modifying the living quarters into
individual, single-occupancy bedrooms and bathrooms so that each firefighter has
privacy during their shift. A focus on privacy is now standard in the fire industry and how
fire houses are currently designed and constructed. The study will review and determine
all impacts associated with necessary modifications including plumbing, electrical,
HVAC, structural, fire exiting, etc. At the completion of the study, the feasibility of
performing the required improvements, and the estimated cost of performing the
improvements, will be known. This information will be used to determine how to best
proceed and, if appropriate, the work will be budgeted and scheduled for
implementation.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve and authorize the City Manager to execute a professional services agreement
with Jeff Katz Architecture in the amount of$12,500 to perform a privacy needs
assessment of Fire Station 2.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Funding is available in CIP No. 18424, Design Fire Station 2.
