received your email expressing your opposition to the speed lumps.
I understand that not everyone will always be in favor of speed lump installations and we require the
strong majority of 67%to make sure that the neighborhood (in general) is in support of the
installation.
I did read your arguments against speed lump installation and they are relatively standard
arguments posted online. Some of the arguments have some limited merit and some do not. Most
commonly, I hear the argument relating to emergency response time, along with noise and property
value concerns. Our Fire Department fully supports the installation of speed lumps and they have
stated that the installation of speed lumps will not impact their need for quick response. Where we
have speed lumps installed we have discussed with residents if they feel the noise has increased or if
the installation has impacted property value. In both cases, the residents have not found any
negative effects of the installation.
Ultimately, I think, the installation comes down to a balance of desires. Lower speeds on the
roadway vs. an extra few seconds in ambulance response time etc. But this is why we have the
program designed to be driven by the residents. Each neighborhood gets to decide as a group what
is best for their street. In the case of Concord Street, the neighborhood (at least 67%of them) have
indicated that they would like to have the lower speeds.
Just as a final reassurance,we don't install speed lumps in front of any homes that don't want them.
I believe the 2 speed lumps to be installed near your home are both approximately 200 feet away
from your home. I can get you the exact location if you need.
Again, I thank you for your continued involvement with the process.Your input helps me to
understand the needs of the neighborhood, and although your desire to not have speed lumps
installed is the minority opinion, I do find your input valuable and I encourage you to continue to
stay involved in your community.
Sincerely,
Mike Tassano
Deputy Director of Community Development,Transportation
From: diane padilla [mailto: ]
Sent: Friday, September 06,
To: Mayor and City Council
Subject: Speed Bumps on Concord Street
Dear City Council,
I am very disappointed that after one traffic meeting it has been decided to add 3 speed
bumps to my street. How many people at the Engineers meeting were from Concord street?
Only Concord St should be able to vote on this especially if the bumps will be in front of their
home. What kind of bumps will be installed?
