Commissioner Deckert thought architecture/renovation recommendations needed to take
place first and would then allow for programming uses to be considered. He indicated he
was not averse to expanding the facility for weddings and programs.
Commissioner Hottle suggested staff inform the commission on programs they think are
important for the space. He also asked about the Parks and Recreation Master Plan and the
community needs indicated in it. Commissioner Hottle felt the commission should be
focusing on needs that the community wants.
Commissioner Fields agreed with Commissioner Hottle's points regarding classes and uses
for this facility but felt a stumbling block was still going to be parking. She commented on
the adjoining park and the need for easy accessibility, being in favor of leaving the building
as is with renovations to code being made, and Pleasanton newcomers not knowing the
city's history. Commissioner Fields felt it was shortsighted to base a building renovation on
programming needs and suggested the facility be brought up -to -code and then programming
planned to fit in the building.
Commissioner Brown stated that she has been to the Century House many times. She felt
the antiquity of the facility should be retained on the outside and the inside changed to meet
programming requirements. Commissioner Brown felt people driving by the facility would
then still see the history aspect and more programming uses could be provided on the
inside.
Chairperson Bowers discussed the importance of maximizing usage for classes that could
also mean adding extra buildings on the site and providing more parking. He suggested the
fagade of the building could be retained and other changes would allow for more
programming. Chairperson Bowers felt it would be helpful if the commission had more
information about the number of people staff anticipates for the different programs. Ms.
Murphy provided details on the space and anticipated number of programs participants.
Commissioner Fields suggested Assistant City Manager, Brian Dolan, contact architects who
specialize in working with historical renovations, to help determine what is the best way for
renovating the Century House.
COMMISSION REPORTS
8.
