DRAFT Arborist Report—Chashmawala Residence HortScience I Bartlett Consulting
4108 Foothill Road, Pleasanton Page 5
Based on my review of the plans, trees#33 and 36 would be within the new residence or
impacted by the proposed changes, requiring their removal (Table 3). Both trees#33 and 36
qualified as Heritage.
Ten (10)of the trees can be preserved, all of which would be from 25' to 50'from the proposed
trenching or grading. All 10 of the trees identified for preservation qualified as Heritage trees.
Preservation of trees is predicated on the adhering to the recommendations provided in the Tree
Preservation Guidelines(following page).
Establishing a Tree Protection Zone (TPZ) around trees identified for preservation prior to the
initiating any demolition, grading or construction processed will be critical to protecting roots and
successfully preserving trees
Table 3: Recommendations for Action
4108 Foothill Road, Pleasanton, CA.
Tree# Species Diameter Heritage Recommendations
18 Valley oak 26" Yes Preserve, 30'from grading, 45'from
trenching
19 Coast live oak 37" Yes Preserve, 40'from grading &trenching
20 Coast live oak 56" Yes Preserve, 50'from grading &trenching
21 Valley oak 27" Yes Preserve, 35'from grading &trenching
27 Valley oak 43" Yes Preserve, outside impacts
31 Valley oak 24" Yes Preserve, 35'from grading &trenching
32 Valley oak 32" Yes Preserve, 30'from grading, 25'from
trenching
33 Valley oak 32" Yes Remove, within building
34 Valley oak 31" Yes Preserve, 35'-40'from ret. wall
36 Valley oak 25" Yes Remove, impacted by building/ret. wall
38 Valley oak 34" Yes Preserve, 30'from grading/bldg.
39 Valley oak 33" Yes Preserve, 40'from grading, 45'from
trenching
Estimated Value of Trees
The City of Pleasanton requires the value be established of all the trees. To accomplish this we
used the standard methods found in Guide for Plant Appraisal, 9th edition (published in 2000 by
the International Society of Arboriculture, Champaign IL). In addition, we referred to Species
Classification and Group Assignment(2004), a publication of the Western Chapter of the
International Society of Arboriculture. These two documents outline the methods employed in tree
appraisal.
The value of landscape trees is based upon four factors: size, species, condition and location.
Size is measured as trunk diameter, normally 54"above grade. A multi-branched tree, which has
major branches below 54" above the natural grade, is measured just below the first major trunk
fork. The species factor considers the adaptability and appropriateness of the plant in the Bay
area. The Species Classification and Group Assignment lists recommended species ratings and
evaluations. Condition reflects the health and structural integrity of the individual, as noted in the
Tree Assessment Form. Location considers the site, placement, and contribution of the tree in its
surrounding landscape. In this case, although the site is located in a desireable residential area of
Pleasanton, the trees are growing on an undeveloped lot, which affects the site and contribution
ratings.
Planning Commission
neer;
b.
