Kelly Cousins, PCAC — invited Commissioners to an 8:00pm concert on June 10, 2019 at the
Firehouse Arts Center at which students will participate with artist Erik Jacobsen. She advised
that the concert is free to attendees having been funded from grant funds received.
MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMISSION
4. Overview of the Teen Poet Laureate Program and Recruitment by Senior
Librarian, Teen Services, Teresa Parham
Ms. Whitney advised that staff had hoped to be able to recognize and award the Teen Poet
Laureate at this meeting, unfortunately she was unable to attend.
Ms. Parham provided information about the Teen Poet Laureate program and how
management of the program had come under her jurisdiction after the retirement of Julie
Finnegan and discussed the interview process that she had participated in after which the .
Teen Poet Laureate had been selected. Additionally, she provided information about some.of
the activities in which the Teen Poet Laureate had been involved during her term:
• Music collaborative during which some of her poems had been put to music
• Working with middle school students at the library after school
• Inclusion of one of her poems on a paper map
• An anthology of poetry from middle school students on display at the library
Ms. Parham commented on her concerns on getting information out about the Teen Laureate
Program with the deadline coming up on June 13, 2019 and was hoping she could get people,
including members of the commission, to assist her in getting information out and getting
poetry samples from applicants. She showed a flyer sample that she was working on to be
distributed.
Chairperson Pellegrino questioned how Ms. Parham would publish information about the
program. Ms. Parham indicated that the best way to promote the program is by word-of-mouth
and social media. Chairperson Pellgrino questioned whether advertising would take place
before school begins, again later in the summer, and suggested perhaps it be done at the
beginning of the school year. Ms. Parham advised that it had been done before school begins
the previous year and had not worked, so she is willing to try doing it at a different time.
Commissioner Wheeler commented on the process and if elected to a Teen Laureate position
what is expected of the Teen. Ms. Parham noted that applicants would be asked to provide.
information during the interview process.
Commissioner Nene discussed the timeline for the program and thought it would work better if
it was coordinated with the beginning of the school year. She also discussed problems with
the adult Poet Laureate program.
Commissioner Jellison suggested the program be opened up to other aspects of art such as
music. She discussed with Ms. Parham having teen volunteers assisting with getting word -out.
about the program.
Civic Arts Commission Minutes
June 3, 2019
Page 2
