MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br />2. Introductions/Awards/Recognitions <br />Ms.. Murphy introduced Commissioners to Children's Librarian Jeff Gibson and advised he <br />would be reviewing item 4 on the agenda with the Commission. She also advised that <br />Commissioner Sabatini was now a regular member of the Commission. <br />3. Public Comment from the audience regarding items not listed on the agenda <br />None. <br />MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMISSION <br />4. Review and Discuss New Robot's on the -Loose! Robotics and Coding for Kids <br />Programming. <br />Mr. Gibson provided information about the $10,000 Library Services and Technology Act grant <br />that was awarded to the library in December 2018 to develop and implement new robotics and <br />coding programs for children in elementary and middle school grades. He also added that <br />The Friends of the Pleasanton Public Library had agreed to fund additional expenses, <br />projected to total $3,688, that are needed for the project. <br />Commissioners were advised that in 2017 the Pleasanton Public Library adopted <br />a strategic plan with a mission to have the Pleasanton community "Start Your Library Here: <br />Discover, Connect, Share" with a vision to "Inspire Curiosity, Creativity and Community". Goal <br />A from the plan, presents an objective to "Strengthen the Library's programs and services to <br />reflect the expectations and desires of the Pleasanton community with three of the six <br />strategies of Goal A being: <br />1. Enhance programming that will encourage exploration and intellectual curiosity <br />2. Expand and enhance Literacy services and programming to improve literacy outcomes <br />in the community, and <br />3.. Increase assistance and instruction for customers in the use of digital services, tools, <br />resources and. general digital literacy skills. <br />To help incorporate these strategies and services staff began looking at ways other libraries <br />were incorporating technology and technology literacy into children's programming and visited <br />several other libraries and tested various programming robots. This research turned to interest <br />in acquiring__ Wonder Workshop's Dash and Dot robots which has led to the purchase of 12 <br />Dash, and 12 Dot robots and the piloting of two programs for elementary students through the <br />5th grade. <br />Library Commission <br />May 2, 2019 <br />Page 2 <br />
