The Economic Development Department will promote the Doing Business with the City
of Pleasanton guide at scheduled workshops and business networking events
throughout the year. The guide and other relevant information will be included on the
City of Pleasanton website so that it is easily accessible by Pleasanton -based
companies and business -supporting organizations such as the Pleasanton Chamber of
Commerce, Pleasanton Downtown Association, Visit Tri -Valley, Hacienda and others.
Support Local Campaign
Ms. Ott offered actions toward developing a support local campaign:
• The Economic Development Department will develop and implement support local
messages and/or campaign to generate awareness among Pleasanton residents of the
value and financial impact of patronizing local shops and services. The City will lead this
effort while incorporating opportunities for Pleasanton -based companies and business -
supporting organizations such as the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, Pleasanton
Downtown Association, Visit Tri -Valley, Hacienda and others to participate.
Ms. Ott further defined that a support local campaign should serve as an `umbrella' for several
efforts to encourage support for local companies, such as Small Business Saturday, Back to
School, holidays, etc.
Ms. Ott also noted several ongoing activities related to business support:
• Networking events such as Tri -Valley Connect
• Commendable Commutes, including Employer and Resident Commute Survey and
transportation fairs
• Business Events such as #GameChangers, Tri -Valley Life Sciences Summit, Women's
Leadership Conference
• Business Needs Survey.
Comments from committee members included:
The City should work with local businesses to encourage business -to -business activity
so sales tax revenues can be put to use locally.
There is a need for mental health services and providers for our residents, so the City
should attract such companies and make better connections to those needing such
services.
Have all requests for qualifications/bids or other contract solicitations available online,
and have all departments reference the business list to encourage application. For
example, the City recently issued an RFP to update the City website, and using a list
from Business License sent a direct message to all local businesses to give them an
opportunity to bid.
o A press release announcing RFPs could be another method to share the
information.
The City should work with the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce and other local
business organizations to share RFPs and other opportunities to do business with the
City.
Will there be tracking of how much the City is spending with local city businesses?
The support local campaign needs to make residents aware of the benefit and impact of
shopping local and how their money is returned to the city, and can help to offset
flattening sales tax revenues.
