MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
2. Introductions/Awards/Recognitions/Present
None.
3. Public Comment from the audience regarding it members of the community
items not listed on the agenda
None.
MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMISSION
4. Review and Recommend Approval of the Design of the Downtown
Transportation Corridor Parking Lot Improvements
Mr. Ho reviewed with the Commissioners a PowerPoint presentation for expansion of
the existing parking lot on the transportation corridor between Bernal Avenue and
Abbie Street in order to increase parking and connectivity to the downtown and
implement the transportation plan, following parking lot design elements for the
Firehouse Arts Center. He advised that the project would provide 140 parking stalls,
a minimum 8 -foot wide concrete pedestrian path, and path landscaping
enhancements. Mr. Ho noted that the projection is to start the project late summer
with completion taking place in early 2020.
This project will have a two-way drive aisle similar to the Firehouse Arts Center
parking lot, a ninety -degree parking configuration on each side, a walking path, and
appropriate landscaping. The project will include a retaining wall, site lighting, a
shared bike and pedestrian path, electric charging stations, drainage improvements,
storm water quality treatment, curb, gutter, asphalt paving and striping.
This proposed project will provide 140 parking spaces, 81 additional parking spaces
than the current parking lot. Landscaping and grading improvements will also be
including for the existing Civic Park.
Mr. Ho reviewed design plans providing information about cross sections, electric
charging stations, landscaping plants, ADA accessibility, and additional features that
include seating, fencing, lights, and trash receptacles. Additionally, Mr. Ho
commented on the extensive outreach and discussions that city staff has had with
property owners and tenants adjacent to the project.
Commissioners were advised that while the trail width is the minimum recommended
in the Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan, it does meet the trail requirments set forth in
the plan.
Parks and Recreation Commission
March 14, 2019
Page 2
