Following lunch, students joined staff for a second job shadow session from 12:25-2:25
p.m. The day's event concluded with a set of reflection questions about the day, paired
conversations between students, and sharing of highlights. This was followed by a
presentation by the Pleasanton Youth Commissioners about ways that students can be
involved in local government.
DISCUSSION
Of the 74 students and roughly 40 staff members in attendance, we received 60
evaluations and 14 evaluations, respectively. Participants were asked the following
questions:
• What were one or two things you enjoyed about Youth in Government Day?
• What are one or two things that you would change or improve for Youth in
Government Day?
• Please share any other comments, feedback, or suggestions.
The feedback was positive, specifically in regards to the opportunity to observe or
participate in real job tasks and see aspects of the City that were previously unknown.
Some of the student feedback included:
• I enjoyed being able to speak and connect with government employees, and
enjoyed being able to tour the civic center and gain a further understanding of the
functioning of our city government.
• I got to see different opportunities at a local level and learned that you should
always do what you want in life!
• Ensure adults sat with students at tables.
• I loved being able to visualize myself in potential careers and the chance to talk
to professionals who know how to answer my questions.
• I would want to have an opportunity to talk to more professionals even for a few
minutes.
• I thought the speaker(Jill Buck) was very inspiring and made me think about how
I can make changes in my daily life to help my community. I thought the
engineering job shadow was incredibly interesting and it made me want to
peruse that career path even more.
Some of the staff feedback included:
• The students had great questions. They showed a genuine care for their
community and wanted to learn about many of the behind the scenes activities
that help a school district function. I had a great time meeting them!
• Consider offering 'tracks'- such as public safety, management/administration,
development, etc. - for which related City staff could partner to host students
• It is so much fun to hear the kids talk about their experiences and to share our
experiences with them (and have them be interested!)
In our committee's review of our own notes, along with student and staff comments, the
following recommendations are being made for the event in the future:
• Continue the structured reflection of the wrap up, which resulted in positive
discussions by students about the day
