The
event was organized by the Youth in Government Day Committee, which included: Kate
Inman (Youth Commission/Amador HS); Nishant Jain (Youth Commissioner/Foothill
HS); Trinity Chang (Youth Commissioner/Foothill HS); Arushi Avachat (Youth
Commissioner/Foothill HS); Keshav Patel (Youth Commissioner/Foothill HS); Beth
Cutter (PUSD), and Joelle Glushenko (City/Library and Recreation). This year 74
students participated in the event: 52 from Amador Valley High School, 18 from Foothill
High School, and 4 from Village High School.
The morning program was held at the Firehouse Arts Center, beginning with networking
and a light breakfast provided by Foothill High School Catering. Welcoming remarks
were provided by Mayor Jerry Thorne, PUSD Superintendent David Haglund, and City
Manager Nelson Fialho, who all spoke about their early life experiences that led them to
the leadership roles they hold today.
Students were paired with employees throughout PUSD and the City of Pleasanton
(City) and shadowed these employees during the morning session from 9:20 - 11: 20
a.m. During this shadowing session, students learned about career paths and were
exposed to many aspects of City and PUSD jobs. Students and staff arrived at the
Veterans Memorial Building for the networking lunch provided by Village High School
Catering. This year, Jill Buck, founder of the Go Green Initiative joined the event as a
keynote speaker, sharing her own experience participating in a similar event in high
school, as well as emphasizing the importance of adaptability and resilience as citizens
make their impact on their local community.
