Kim Waxman — supports making a new skate park a priority because it will provide a
safe outlet for kids and provide a safe place for them to skateboard, especially if it
includes lights and benches. She indicated she has visited other parks that are free
and allows kids to join others skateboarding. Ms. Waxman feels it would be great to
have a good skateboard park in the Tri-Valley area for local kids and where kids can
come from other areas. She commented on the importance of having a safe skate
park for kids in the local community and would also help keep them off electronics.
Zackery Paden — supports making a skateboarding park a priority. He felt the current
park is too small and not challenging enough for older kids and that extending and
improving the park needs to take place. Zackery commented on improvements in the
city made for other sports and thought improving the current park and adding a new
park should be considered.
Amy Atkinson Paden — indicated she is the mom of the kids who all skateboard at the
current park, but it is tight in space and felt a priority should be given to extending the
current skate park and building a new skate park.
Tyler Gilliland — stated that skateboarding is a good outlet for kids to show self-
expression and stay out of trouble. He asked the Commission to consider expanding
the current skate park at the sports park.
Judith Scarone — asked the Commission to prioritize building a new skateboard park,
but indicated she was also requesting adding portable steps in the lap pool at the
Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center be given a priority, as seniors using the pool have
difficulty getting in and out of the pool. Ms. Scarone indicated she has researched
the cost of portable steps that is between $70 to $700 and the steps are needed for
safety reasons. She also noted that broken tiles and concrete in and near this pool
are another safety concern.
Debi Zentner — commented on an All-Access Park and the difficulties for people with
disabilities, especially those in wheelchairs and kids that have issues who want to
play in parks. She noted that Pleasanton is a Community of Character and needs to
have a park dedicated for those with disabilities.
Kendra Mayott — stated she has a child in a wheelchair. Ms. Mayott noted that
Pleasanton is proud of its park, but children with disabilities cannot access park areas
because of the use of tanbark. She commented on a fantastic all-access park in
Walnut Creek that she takes her children to and felt that such a park was needed in
Pleasanton as this was an unmet need.
Stephanie Rauscher — asked the Commission to prioritize building an Inclusionary/
All-Access Park where all kids can play together. She commented on having to go to
parks in other areas to fill the need for her family and felt this was something lacking
in Pleasanton. Building such a park would allow kids with special needs to play with
their peers and show that Pleasanton cares for everyone.
Parks and Recreation Commission
February 14,2019
Page 5
