Livermore Valley Opera Outreach Requested Funding: $7,500
Pleasanton Student Outreach Program Average Recommended Funding: $7,400
Olympic Average (no high/low): $7,500
Tentative Votes: 5-0
Since 2011, the Livermore Valley Opera's (LVO) Student Outreach Program has brought
professional singers and musicians to middle and high school classrooms to introduce and
demonstrate opera, and to coach students in vocal and musical performance. We will continue
to produce an age-appropriate opera program for grade school and middle school assemblies.
We will also continue to provide free tickets to students and teachers to attend the Student
Performance opera dress rehearsals at the Bankhead Theater in October and March.
Commission Questions/Comments:
There were none for this program.
Staff Comments:
Livermore Valley Opera did not have a City grant last year.
With a request of$7,500 and estimated Pleasanton residents served at 4,000, the cost per
resident is $1 .88.
Pleasanton Community Concert Band Requested Funding: $5,300
Commissioned Composition; Alisal Suite Average Recommended Funding: $5,250
Olympic Average (no high/low): $5,300
Tentative Votes: 5-0
The PCCB is seeking funding to commission a Concert Band composition entitled, "Alisal Suite",
to be composed by Dr. Gary P. Gilroy. Dr.Gilroy is not only an outstanding composer but is an
avid student of California history. "Alisal"is the settlement that became Pleasanton.
When we perform the "World Premier"of the work, it will be in Pleasanton, and we would have
Dr. Gilroy provide a short introductory historic primer as to the historical inspirations for each
movement of the suite.
This composition and accompanying dialogue could be used in collaboration with the Museum
on Main and possibly other local history-focused entities to provide a forum for encouraging
citizens to visits and support those other organizations.
Commissioner Questions/Comments:
Commissioners commented that this would be a unique opportunity for new music with local
inspiration.
Staff Comments:
Last year, this organization was late with a mid-term report.
With a request of$5,300 and estimated Pleasanton residents served at 50, the cost per resident
is $106.
