staff. The building systems were analyzed and the cost to construct the remodel,
including all new furniture which the remodel will be designed to accommodate, is
estimated at $1.25 million dollars. This estimate will be refined as the design is refined.
The remodel will accommodate all existing staff within the library, and allow for an
additional 12 staff members to be relocated into the building. The remodel will require
that some of the library's storage be relocated. This storage is mostly seasonal
materials, but it must be readily accessible. To accomplish this, a storage unit will be
located immediately east of the library, near the trash enclosure. The storage will be
accessed through the double doors on the east side of the building. As proposed, there
will be a public counter in the library for staff to assist customers as they do now at the
public counter in the modular office space. Details of the remodel are shown in the
attached concept plans (see Attachment 1).
The concept plans have been presented to the Pleasanton Friends of the Library and
the Library Commission. The presentations included "field trips" to the library at which
the limits of the expansion were marked out so that each group could see how the
library public area would be affected. Both the Pleasanton Friends and the Commission
supported the concept.
Finalizing the design and creating biddable construction documents will be in June
2019. We will then advertise for construction bids. Assuming bidding is successful, a
construction contract will be presented to City Council for award in late July/early
August 2019. Construction will then begin after Labor Day 2019, when library activity
slows after summer.
Construction is estimated to take five to six months, and the library will remain open
during normal business hours. During the construction, current staff will be temporarily
relocated to the large library meeting room, which will be divided into office space and
public space for the construction period. Some of the construction that generates
significant noise, such as demolition, will occur at night, outside normal library hours.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
far l
Stephen Kirkpatrick Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Engineering Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
