New plantings could restore riparian habitat along the north side of the creek and
provide an amenity for users of Kottinger Village Park (Kottinger Gardens, an affordable
residential project for seniors, is located to the west and south of the park). Potential
restoration activities along this segment of Kottinger Creek include:
• Additional planting of native trees;
• Planting of undcrstory native plants suitable for upland areas and adapted to long
dry conditions within a 30-foot buffer on the north side of the creek; and
• Potential dismantling of the chain link fence and a portion of concrete wall that
lines the southern portion of the creek channel, in order to enhance riparian
habitat and use of the creek as a wildlife corridor.
There is an existing irrigation system in place within Kottinger Village Park that could be
adjusted to sustain the new riparian plantings.
J.
