Commissioner Chew asked about funding requested for a staff person to train students and the
kinds of jobs that students would be doing. Ms. Dulka indicated that this is to be a leadership
development program and they would be learning ways of accessing diaper supplies and then
distributing to families. The language/literacy program will provide reading materials/books to
the low-income families, so they have the tools and resources needed to help them improve
language development. The program will be tailored for individual students.
Commissioner Chew was informed by Ms. Dulka that if funding is received the goal is to be able
to have 250 students participate in the program but believes that number could increase.
Ms. Dilks provided information about the language/literacy program, noting that many low-
income families in the community do not have resources available to them and this program will
help make sure that babies born into these families will have the best opportunities to grow up to
be successful. She also commented on partnering with other groups to provide low-income
parents with additional parenting help and guidance.
Commissioner Allari questioned the $1,500 request for supplies and whether this would be for
the purchase of books. Ms. Dilks advised that it was for books and discussed a calendar that
promotes different items.
Teen Esteem, Susan Timms — PUSD Elementary/Middle School Assemblies — advised that
funds are being requested to enable them to schedule the delivery of assemblies at elementary
and middle schools on challenges that are facing students. Ms. Timms commented on the
importance of the spoken word and the effects of social media and that providing information
through assemblies they hope to be able to reach 5,000 students.
Commissioners discussed with Ms. Timms how assemblies would be made interesting to
younger students.
Commissioner Allari was informed by Ms. Timms that funding would be used to pay for speakers
to develop content for the program and staff would work with schools to do survey collection.
Commissioner Chew advised she has seen some of the presentations and thought they were
great. She asked about results of surveys and whether information was being provided back to
the schools, so they could work on them. Commissioner Franklin asked about the grades that
participate in the assemblies.
Commissioner Allari asked about the cost of the program for the different schools and
Commissioner Shotland wondered how this program differed from others being presented at
schools.
Chairperson Patel closed the meeting for presentations at 7:00 p.m. and suggested a 10-
minute break. The meeting resumed at 7:08 p.m.
Youth Commission Minutes
March 14, 2018
Page 4
