• The commitment by TVRT to focus on diversity in casting and shows produced;
• TVRT's 34 years of experience producing shows that built a loyal and strong fan
base that trusts their product;
• TVRT does not require additional rehearsal space, thereby freeing up currently
used rehearsal space for revenue generating programming;
• The ability for TVRT to build all of their sets off-site as there is no building space
available at the Firehouse Arts Center; and
• The cost effectiveness of the proposal.
The screening committee felt strongly that the Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre would not
only continue the excellent level of theater that the community has come to expect, but
that the City's program would continue to grow and the experiences for the community
would be enriched with TVRT.
At the March 5 Civic Arts Commission meeting, commissioners heard a presentation
from Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre (TVRT) regarding the success of their company and
the work they plan to provide for the Pleasanton community, if awarded the contract.
The commissioners reviewed over 53 letters of support for TVRT and heard from 6
people in support of TVRT during the public comment portion of the meeting. The
commission also reviewed five (5) letters of support for PCRT and heard from four (4)
people in support of PCRT during the public comment portion of the meeting.
The commissioners voted (5-2) to recommend the City Council approve the theatrical
services contract with Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre. Aye votes were from
Commissioners Farley-Rogers, Jellison, Nene, Steenman and Wedge-Bonde. Nay
votes were from Commissioners Casey and Pellegrino. The commissioners who voted
aye, were pleased with the community support for TVRT. They felt the production value
of TVRT shows was high and would be a great benefit to the community. They were
impressed with TVRT's years of experience producing shows in the Tri-Valley and they
appreciated the work the screening committee had done thus far in the process. They
also felt it very beneficial that TVRT would not require the additional rehearsal space
and that space could then be used for other revenue generating programs. The
commissioners who voted nay had questions concerning the RFP and RFQ processes,
which staff has outlined in more detail within this agenda report.
Tri-Valley Repertory Theatre is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation—a volunteer
organization dedicated to providing affordable quality theatre, theatrical training, a
showcase for talent, and a cultural experience within the Tri-Valley and East Bay
communities.
TVRT is currently in their 34th year of providing professional quality musical theater and
in their 28th year of providing a true community chorus. Attendance at their various
productions exceeds 12,000 people annually.
TVRT produces at least three main stage shows, two concerts and two summer theater
camps per year. Throughout their history, they have produced over 140 shows, 30
concerts and 33 summer camps showcasing talents of thousands of people.
Page 3of4
