BACKGROUND
"Project Paint Box" is a utility box beautification program that celebrates local artwork
and encourages regional artists to share their creativity throughout the City of
Pleasanton. Vibrant artwork helps deter unsightly graffiti and creates pleasant spaces
for residents and visitors. At the May 5, 2014 Civic Arts Commission Workshop, the
Commission discussed this project and in July, a 'Call for Artists" was placed in local,
regional and national artists' forums, and in the local press. Additionally, several local
artists were personally notified.
Since July 2014, the City Council has approved sixteen (16) designs and all have been
applied to local utility boxes. At its February 5, 2018 meeting, the Civic Arts Commission
approved these four (4) proposed designs and requested that their recommendation be
forwarded to the City Council for their review and consideration (Attachments 2-5).
DISCUSSION
The following designs are being recommended for approval and installation at locations
pictured in Attachment 1:
1. "Poetree" — artist, Molly Keen
a. Artist Description: "Color, movement, activation, dynamic, and integrated
are the words I would use to describe this piece. I will create an iconic box
that inspires cyclists riding by, neighbors chatting on their morning walk,
and for drivers to feel ease when waiting in line at the light. My work
inspired by the oak tree of Pleasanton, will create an inviting and calm
atmosphere for the neighborhood and invite people to engage with the
piece. I have created poetry about the oak tree and have included the
poetry for the piece. From far away it looks like one thing and closer you
can see the poetry." (Refer to Attachment 2 for additional detail.)
b. The Civic Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on
the utility box located at the corner of Black Avenue and Hopyard Road.
2. "Bicycle Box" — artist, Irma Grant
a. Artist Description: "Many cyclers pass by the proposed location and this
design will speak to them and their efforts to be healthy."
b. The the Civic Arts Commission stated that they liked the connection to the
proposed location and the orientation of the bike. Since the location has
two boxes they recommend painting a toddler bike on the second box as
well.
c. The Civic Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on
the utility box located at the corner of West Las Positas and Iron Horse
Trail.
3. "Stop and Smell the Flowers" — artist, Ally McKay
a. Artist Description: "design is inspired by a theme of living well. Stress is
increasing every day and if we stop and smell the flowers the world would
be happier and healthier."
b. The Civic Arts Commission stated they appreciate that the artist is a youth
and feel the location is a good fit for the piece.
