BACKGROUND
Well #5 is one of three potable water production wells owned and operated by the City.
It is a 200 horsepower deep well submersible motor pump made by manufacturer Byron
Jackson which is owned and distributed by Flowserve Corporation. Well #5 typically
produces up to 8% of the total drinking water used in the City throughout the year.
Consequently, with a delivery lead time of up to 12 weeks, it is important to begin the
process of replacing this critical asset as soon as possible ahead of spring when water
demands start increasing.
DISCUSSION
Well #5 failed on November 3, 2017. Electrical inspection and testing results showed a
direct short in the motor wiring. Well #5 was last replaced in 1999 and before that,
1983. With an average operational period of 17 years, the Byron Jackson well pump
has continued to perform extremely well beyond the average normal lifespan for a pump
asset that runs as much as this well.
Due to the exceptional reliability history of Byron Jackson pumping equipment in its
wells, and in an effort to standardize its equipment to the greatest degree possible,
Pleasanton Water Utilities will utilize Pump Repair Service Co., the only authorized and
factory trained Byron Jackson submersible pump dealer in Northern California.
Submitte, •y; Fiscal Review: Approved y:
‘1),
-thleen Yurchak Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Operations Director of Finance City Manager
and Water Utilities
Attachment:
1.
