that it was widely successful in promoting literacy for all ages through all types of literature. The mission of the Literary Arts Ambassador Program would be to raise awareness of the importance of literature as it relates to lifelong literacy and education toward the development and enhancement of the lives of Pleasanton residents. The Literary Arts Ambassador position and qualifications would be fashioned similarly to the Adult Poet Laureate position but the literary component would be broadened to include all literature and not just poetry. City staff along with community members and past Poet Laureates feel that this change would help encourage new Ambassadors to apply for the position and bring new growth to programming. The Literary Arts Ambassador would share appropriate poetry and/or literary pieces at public events and dedications, as well as conduct literary workshops, readings and events. One of the goals of the program would be to have this position be a supportive mentor to the City's current Teen Poet Laureates. Historically the Poet Laureate position received no remuneration. However, with the creation of the Literary Arts Ambassador Program the Civic Arts Commission is recommending a stipend of $1,000 for the services performed as part of this position. Funding for the stipend is included in the Community Services Department's operating budget for fiscal year 2017/2018.
