Commissioner Wedge-Bonde suggested the Commission consider allocating evenly the
$3,180 from Livermore Valley Opera between all other applicants and adding the amount to
their Olympic Average.
Commissioners Steenman and Nene questioned whether the grant application from Axis
Community Health met the Vision Statement of the Commission. Commissioner Wedge-
Bonde felt that art could be seen anywhere and felt the request would still be something that
would benefit Pleasanton residents. Commissioner Nene agreed and felt it would be a good
way for local photographers to showcase their work.
Commissioner Nene questioned whether in the future some of the agencies requesting funding
for school programs should consider providing a lesser number of performances, so more
applicants could apply. Commissioner Wheeler felt focusing on school events was leaving out
others in the community and suggested small charges for events be considered.
Commissioner Steenman commented on the possibility of applicants not being able to do their
events with the amount of funding indicated in the Olympic Average, and Commissioner Nene
asked if any agencies would agree to reduce the number of performances to be provided.
Commissioner Wheeler commented on repeat performances getting people to attend and the
funding request for the jazz band would only benefit eight (8) low-income Pleasanton students.
Chairperson Jellison noted that the jazz program would be for people from all over the Valley
and whether it would be attracting people.
Commissioner Wedge-Bonde suggested the Commission consider funding some programs at
a higher level and take funds away from other programs. Commissioner Nene agreed.
Commissioner Wheeler suggested Axis Community Health consider rotating art at their facility
with art being provided by the Pleasanton Art League. She also suggested a larger amount of
funding be considered for Chez Nami.
During consideration of all the grant funding application requests representatives from Pacific
Chamber Orchestra and Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center indicating their ability to
provide programs if the amount of funding received was reduced. Based on information
received from these agencies and in considering all funding applications Commissioners came
to a conclusion and made their funding recommendations.
A motion was made by Commissioner Steenman, seconded by Commissioner Wedge-Bonde,
recommending the following FY 2017/18 Community Grant Funding allocations in the Civic
Arts Category:
$ 2,363 - Amador Livermore Valley Historical Society
-0- - Axis Community Health
$ 5,748 - Cantabella Children's Chorus
$ 4,626 - Cheza Nami Foundation, Inc.
Civic Arts Commission Minutes
March 6, 2017
Page 4
