Commissioner Roby was pleased to learn that the three cities were working together on this
and Commissioner Wright agreed the Tri-Valley Haven buildings are in need of repair but
questioned whether this would impede their programs. Ms. Hopkins noted that the City of
Pleasanton has provided the largest amount of funding for the programs.
Ms. Hopkins discussed with Commissioner Hayes funding that needs to be set aside for when
the dental project is ready to move forward.
Chairperson Clare questioned how the Commission wished to move forward in reviewing the
grant applications.
Commissioners discussed the Tri-Valley haven Sojourner House project and the affects to the
program by new Alameda County requirements and the meetings that have been taking place
between the cities of Dublin, Livermore and Pleasanton. They discussed the staff
recommendation that would allow the shelter to continue operating for the next year.
Commissioner Sedlak noted that the grant funding request was for salaries and Commissioner
Wright asked about case management and questioned if the funding would allow the program
to continue until staff from the three cities have had an opportunity to learn more from the
County. Ms. Hopkins noted that this was a regional issue and something that staff has been
working on since August 2016.
Ms. Hopkins commented on the Legal Assistance for Senior program and services being
provided to help with issues of seniors being evicted from their homes.
Commissioner Sedlak commented on the lack of a report from Easter Seals Bay Area on what
they had done with the funding they had received the previous year. Ms. Hopkins indicated
that she would provide this at the next meeting.
Ms. Hopkins commented on how City Serve has been an integral part of providing services
within the community and are filling gaps by helping individuals. She advised that key partners
of the organization are faith-based, and indicated that the Human Services Needs Assessment
Strategic Plan encouraged better collaboration between the City and the faith-based
community for support and delivery of human services. City Serve is providing services that
are of much value to the city.
Commissioner Wright indicated that she would like to provide some funding for the Sunflower
Hill Gardens/Capital Gardens Op Equipment project. Commissioners Roby and Sedlak agreed
and thought the project met the Commission priority. They also discussed the residential
program. Commissioner Hayes thought this might be a better fit for consideration by the Youth
Commission.
Commissioner Parekh felt that food and shelter were the basic projects that the Commission
should be considered.
Human Services Commission
March 1, 2017
Page 6
