I ride on BART Monday through Friday in order to get to
my job in Oakland and the change to the roadway directly in front of it is a major concern to me. Traffic on Owens Drive
at peak commute times was not easy prior to the change in the street design but post the re-design it is pure gridlock
when attempting to exit at the light for Willow and Owens when you attempt to proceed eastbound on Owens Drive.
I was shocked when the road was narrowed to accommodate parking and to essentially create landscaped area in front
of the ugly apartment building that have been constructed across from the BART station in Pleasanton. I understand the
spaces were to accommodate businesses in the structure but to date, I do not believe any business have moved into the
commercial space and it appears that the apartment tenants are using these spaces.
I was surprised that the City of Pleasanton agreed to narrow the roadway to accommodate parking and a large
landscaped area, when in reality the City Council should have been looking at widening to accommodate the ever
increasing traffic on our gridlocked streets that has resulted from the boom of high density residential construction the
our city government appears to be continually approving. Quite honestly, due to the change I try to avoid travelling on
Owens and look for alternate businesses to frequent because the current design of the roadway.
As a Pleasanton resident and homeowner and BART commuter, I am requesting the City of Pleasanton restore Owens
Drive.
Thanks,
Melissa Burley
Program Manager-Liability and Property Programs
University of California
Office of Risk Services
1
