I have long advocated
for a farm to be established in the park and in fact was on the Park& Recreation Commission when we codified the
master plan which includes a farm. However, many years later, the needs have changed for what was envisioned as a
4H type facility. It appears that need has been filled or is being filled on the Alameda County Fairgrounds property. So,
in my role as a councilmember, I have advocated that we still built a farm, at least build a barn, plant orchards, etc. I
think having something like this helps to preserve the history of our community as a farming region and provides
opportunities for a couple of harvests per year based on whatever crops are grown.
As for the involvement of the Master Gardeners, I think that's a bit premature right now as the big challenge is to
maintain the planning for a farm, of some sort. But I would welcome the Master Gardeners input and support as this
comes through the pipeline. And we do have a community garden in Pleasanton. I was on the Park& Recreation
Commission when we opened Val Vista Park and there's a wonderful community garden there that is open to our
residents. I'm not sure the Master Gardeners are involved at this site or if it even fits their needs but thought I'd
mention it.
But I do believe we're on the same page, lets build a farm on on the Bernal Property and when we do, let's work
together to facilitate its use.
Regards,
Jerry
Jerry Pentin
Vice Mayor-2017
2
