BACKGROUND
Callippe Preserve Golf Course has been open for public play since November 2005.
Callippe continues to be one of Northern California's most popular and award - winning
golf courses. Although Callippe Preserve has been well received by players in the Bay
Area since it's opening in November of 2005, course improvements are planned
annually to maintain the challenging course design, enhance player experience and
address wear and tear on heavily used areas of the course and any maintenance
matters. In 2015, several greens and bunkers on holes #10 and #14 were rebuilt to
correct some design deficiencies and this year's proposed bunker renovation project
has been identified as a priority to address grading issues and slope deterioration.
DISCUSSION
City staff along with its operator CourseCo have designed a multi -year bunker
improvement plan that includes renovation of several bunkers of the course's fifty -eight
bunkers each year. This improvement plan is typical amongst golf course maintenance
practices to repair wear and tear on heavily used areas of the course and to address
any maintenance matters that typically occur in bunkers, including grade improvements,
rebuilding slopes and improving drainage.
This project includes renovation to the bunkers on holes #3, #8, and #9 and would
continue the practice of course renovation work that started last year with improvements
to holes #10 and #14. The scope of the project includes removing unwanted dirt from
the sides of the bunkers that mixes with the existing bunker sand thus changing its
consistency and playability. Due to this mixing, the bunkers no longer drain effectively.
During moderate rain events, sand washes off the faces bringing dirt and rock with it,
thus causing the poor drainage. By installing a permanent liner between the sand and
soil, dirt is prevented from washing off bunker slopes. The scope of work to be
performed by D.H.R. Construction Inc. is detailed in Exhibit A of the Contract for
Contractor Goods /Services (Attachment 1). Work under this contract would begin March
1. 2017.
Submitted by:
Kathleen Yurchak
Director of Operations
and Water Utilities
Fiscal Review:
/n/
Tina Olson
Director of Finance
Attachment: 1.
