This includes the use of the green bike crossings through the
intersection as well as improved routing/wayfinding for bicyclists using the "interim" Iron
Horse Trail. The eastbound approach would require removing the right turn lane and
replacing it with a wide bike lane. This intersection treatment would be beneficial at all
of our interim Iron Horse Trail intersections, and would be a good series of projects all
along the Iron Horse Trail Corridor. In addition, the shared path marking would provide
an additional reminder to trail users of the various types of users.
Medium-term
Construction of a protected intersection for the two crossings that make up the interim
Iron Horse Trail is a medium-term improvement. The protected intersection provides an
added level of comfort by being physically separated from vehicles when at the
intersection. The gray areas shown on the image represents concrete islands that
prevent vehicles from entering the bicycle area.
Shown conceptually on the image at the top of the next page is a possible northbound
bike lane through the intersection that would lead to a newly constructed bike path.
Analysis of benefits and drawbacks of constructing this bike path and ramp would need
to be completed prior to approval of this element of the medium term project. Additional
review is necessary to determine if opening the path for northbound bicycles will create
the condition of southbound pedestrians or southbound bicyclists using this path. This
is an undesirable outcome as pedestrian access to and from the north east corner is the
long term project and would require a complete reconstruction of the corner including
the retaining wall.
