Staff recommends this option (Option 1), but also describes another tree mitigation option (Option 2) in the event Council determines that Option 1 is undesirable. Option 1 To ensure the survivability of the northern of the two heritage trees, the driveway along Augustine Street should be relocated farther south so that the driveway entrance is centered on the proposed drive aisle. This would result in a layout that would extend the planting area to the south and west of the tree, which would allow the tree more room to grow. Furthermore, the grade of the proposed pavement should be raised to eliminate the need to cut through the roots of the tree. Excavation should be limited under the dripline of the tree by utilizing a thinner pavement section, approved by the applicant's geotechnical engineer, so that the subgrade is approximately at existing grade. A thinner pavement section in the vicinity of the northern oak is also recommended. In addition, a certified arborist should be on-site during site excavation within the tree driplines and to provide pruning recommendations.
