BACKGROUND
"Project Paint Box" is a utility box beautification program that celebrates local artwork
and encourages regional artists to share their creativity throughout the City of
Pleasanton. Vibrant artwork helps deter unsightly graffiti and creates pleasant spaces
for residents and visitors. At its May 5, 2014 Civic Arts Commission Workshop, the
Commission discussed this project and in July, a "Call for Artists" was placed locally,
regionally and nationally in artists forums, job arenas and in the local press. Additionally
several local artists were personally notified. To date eleven (11) boxes have been
painted and three (3) have received sponsorships.
DISCUSSION
Four (4) design proposals are to be considered by the City Council for approval.
1. "1913" —artist, Tony Bailey
a. Artist Description: This design is based on a group of Pleasanton
motorcycle riders photographed on Rose Avenue over a century ago.
(Refer to attachment 4 for additional detail.)
b. Comments from the PASS committee and Civic Arts Commission include:
members liked the historic connection to the town.
c. Since there is no box located at Rose Avenue available to paint, the Civic
Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on the utility
box located at Bernal Avenue and Kohl Center.
2. "California Wildlife" — artist, Bianca Nandzik
a. Artist Description: "When I painted the utility box last year, people kept
telling me about the Callippe butterfly and other local species like the
California red-legged frog and the California tiger salamander." (Refer to
attachment 3 for additional detail.)
b. Comments from the PASS committee and Civic Arts Commission include:
they appreciated the connection to the local wildlife.
c. The Civic Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on
the utility box located at Black Avenue and the 680 Interchange. The Civic
Arts Commission also asked if the artist would be interested in painting the
other box located at 680 and Bernal Avenue. The artist is interested and
upon return from her international travels will submit a complimentary
design for the other box.
3. "Dreamscape" — artist, Austin Willis
a. Artist Description: "In Dreamscape I used bright colors and bold lines in
order to create a landscape of various shapes and forms. The forms and
colors work together to create an abstract landscape reminiscent of a kind
of candy land, or in my own opinion a kind of place where nothing bad
ever occurs. The idea with the piece is to create positive emotion through
abstract colors and forms. (Refer to attachment 2 for additional detail.)
